Live Events Reimagined
Hybrid Events was created in 2020, when the world suddenly had to find different ways to gather.
We believed the future of live events would not simply be physical or virtual. Smaller gatherings in different places could be connected through real-time digital participation, reducing unnecessary travel while extending access.
More than 500,000 people participated in events delivered through Hybrid Events during the first lockdown.
What began as a response to a crisis became something else: an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between gathering, technology, travel and environmental impact.
A pause in the industry created an unusual opportunity
During the same period, the Event Greening Programme worked with leading partners, including Eventbrite, to examine the environmental impact of the live events industry in greater depth.
The sudden interruption of global events allowed us to see more clearly what the industry consumed through travel, energy, materials, infrastructure and waste. It became a rare opportunity to examine the environmental cost of gathering while much of that activity had temporarily stopped.
What remained
The technology changed quickly. The observation remained.
Scale does not have to mean more movement, more infrastructure or more consumption.
Hybrid Events changed our understanding of what a live event could be. The environmental work changed our understanding of what it costs to create one.
Walk gently. Gather meaningfully.
